The troughs are located on Old Road and can be viewed, still in their original location, but in need of further work to stabilise and preserve the site. They are thought to be at least two hundred years old but much more research will be needed to determine the exact date. They are two in number and are spring fed and therefore constantly flowing, the current problem is that the water cannot drain properly and consequently they are partly flooded, especially during heavy rain. The troughs had been gradually covered after falling into disuse, but were revealed again during work by Ashfield District Council in 2003 to try and discover the cause of flooding in the area. The troughs appear to be at a lower level than when they were in regular use due to the road level being progressively raised to cure a severe dip in Old Road, presumably caused by the repeated use of the troughs by cattle and horses.
